Bumble Bee Foods, a US-based seafood provider, is working with SAP to help trace yellowfin tuna from the ocean to the dinner table through blockchain technologies.

Critical issues, such as spread of foodborne illness, food contamination and unnecessary waste have given rise to the trend of food traceability since couple of years. The blockchain technology is deemed apt when it comes to tackle these challenges.

Bumble Bee Foods, well known for canned meat products, has tied up with German software firm SAP to use its Cloud Platform Blockchain service to trace the journey of yellowfin tuna fish from the Indonesian waters to the dinner table.

Consumers should be at ease and feel safe now because SAP’s blockchain technology is able to access the complete information, such as the origin and history of Bumble Bee Foods’ Natural Blue by Anova yellowfin tuna. They can simply use their smartphones to scan a QR code on the product package, which reveals all the information about the fish-to-market journey instantly. This info also includes the point of capture, size of the catch and the fishing community that caught it. This easily verifies the authenticity, freshness, safety, fair trade fishing certification and sustainability.

Last October, IBM Food Trust, a blockchain-based food and supply chain solution, went live for use by global retailers. This is said to be one of the first-ever enterprise projects of its scale to get to market. This launch of the solutions-as-a-service cloud platform followed 18 months of development and testing with partners including Walmart, Nestle, Dole, and 3M. During this same period, the company also signed French supermarket giant Carrefour, which brought 12,000 stores across 33 countries to the network.
