The world’s first purported blockchain operating system has been announced by block.one.

EOS is designed to support commercial decentralised applications and help them scale both vertically and horizontally.

It does this through an OS-like infrastructure which serves as a foundation for applications to be built directly on top of.

The software can then authenticate accounts, databases, communication and scheduling for applications across multiple machines or clusters.

This results in a blockchain infrastructure capapble of eliminating user fees and deployment delays for decentralised applications.

Brendan Blumer, CEO of block.one, said:

“Existing applications such as exchanges and social media already service millions of customers daily and require a platform that can process hundreds of thousands of transactions per second.

“With EOS, we are building software to allow businesses to build their applications using an architecture similar to modern website frameworks. This would allow a whole range of businesses to use the blockchain, similar to the way that the computing era exploded after Microsoft Windows enabled developers to build interoperable software.”

The company plans to release the EOS.IO software under an open source software license.

Token sale

The company has announced that it will begin its digital token distribution on Monday 26 June.

The distribution will follow a participation model that will take place over 12 months. The longer timespan reflects a desire to create ‘the fairest token distribution project launched on ethereum to date’.

The company will sitribute a billion EOS tokens over 341 days. 20% will be distributed in the first five days and 70% will be split into 350 consecutive 23 hour periods.

The remaining 10% will be retained by block.one and cannot be traded or transferred on the Ethereum network.

Blumer added:

“To ensure inclusivity, EOS are not sold for a fixed price, but sold at a price determined by market demand; this mimics mining, but does not offer unfair advantages to large purchasers.”
