Nestlé and Carrefour have collaborated on a blockchain project wherein the technology is being applied to infant nutrition to improve customer buying experience in terms of transparency and product quality.
The technology will be used on the Swiss food and beverage giant’s entire Guigoz Bio 2 and 3 infant milk range that will allow shoppers to access complete information about the supply chain used to bring the product to the shelf through a scan of a QR code on the packaging.
The accessible information is provided by Laboratoires Guigoz, which aims to highlight its expertise and ensure the quality of its products. Both Nestlé and Carrefour are members of the IBM Food Trust Platform and have already worked together on blockchain in France where they used the technology to Moussline purée products.
In July, Nestlé entered into a partnership with the OpenSC blockchain platform to help bring greater provenance to the supply chain. This association made the Swiss firm the first major food company in the world to pilot open blockchain technology and instigating transparency. The first stage of the pilot included tracing milk from farms and producers in New Zealand to the company’s factories and warehouses in the Middle East region.
The previous month, Carrefour said its sales increased as a result of implementing blockchain to track meat, milk and fruit from farms to stores. The French retailer introduced blockchain information for 20 products, including chicken, eggs, raw milk, oranges, pork and cheese and planning to add 100 more by the year’s end.
