Canadian Pacific Railway, also known as CP Rail, has joined the Blockchain in Transport Alliance (BiTA).

BiTA comprises nearly 500 members from different industries, including freight, transportation, logistics, and affiliated industries. The alliance, which is focused on education, advocacy, networking, and commercial outcomes around blockchain and other emerging technologies, is dedicated to overcoming geographic, language and cultural hurdles to allow a seamless and smooth-running commerce.

Patrick Duffy, president of BiTA, said: “The alliance is pleased to have CP’s expertise and support as our organisation navigates this exciting new digital frontier. Blockchain has the potential to smooth the transactions that occur between shippers and carriers, but it requires the active participation of transportation leaders like CP.”

Last May, as this publication reported, Indian IT firm HCL Technologies joined BiTA, becoming a new member alongside Daimler, FedEx and SAP. HCL, which offers a blockchain application platform called ‘CoTrust’, at that time, had said that it will “bring its deep expertise in digital technologies to the alliance and help develop blockchain-based solutions for the industry.”

In the same month, the Mediterranean island of Malta – as part of its blockchain strategy – launched a project in collaboration with blockchain middleware platform provider Omnitude to help the country’s public transport infrastructure. A release from the government’s Malta Information Technology Agency in October said that the country is ‘aspiring to be at the forefront in regulating the blockchain sector so that it can repeat its success in the gaming sector.’
