Ethereum-based food provenance system launched

Global food supply chain

OwlTing, an e-commerce platform focused on food safety, has announced the integration of blockchain technology into its supply chain infrastructure.

In partnership with vendors Nice Garden and Upwelling Ocean, the OwlChain platform hopes to create ‘a benchmark for better food safety’.

OwlTing wants to use technological advances to reinvent customer experiences. Their OwlTing Map product, for instance, integrates detailed diary and fruit product profiles with geophysical info. This allows purchasers to see high quality producers and place orders through the app.

OwlChain uses blockchain to create ‘tamper-resistant’ food provenance networks for the global food supply chain. The aim is to allow the public toto have information on every step of the production and distribution processes of the foods they are purchasing.

If consumers want to focus on producers with ethical practices they can, or they can choose to focus primarily on local supply chains or those with safer practices.

“While most e-commerce platforms charge farmers with annual fees for product listing, OwlTing farmers pay zero annual fees and are only charged a low commission for each product sold on our platform.  We want to help farmers earn more, so they can invest in their future.” – Darren Wang, OwlTing founder

Aside from providing more information to consumers, the platform may have applications for conservation and sustainability.

One issue that is of particular concern is trying to tackle the IUU (illegal, unreported and unregulated) fishing trade.

“According to UN, 77% of global fishing resources have reached saturation or are overdeveloped. In recent years, people in Taiwan become [sic] more aware of seafood safety and the production process’ impact on the resources.” – Upwelling Ocean founder Steven Shyu
